curator, scholar, consultant & coach
Award winning contemporary art curator from the global south specialized in Modern and contemporary ceramics.
Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Princessehof National Ceramics Museum in the Netherlands.
My career reflects a long-term commitment to social and environmental justice and I have curated exhibitions across the globe as well as published monographs and book chapters on associated topics.
Projects have focused on sustainability, race and identity, digital materialities, gender and connoisseurship in the early twentieth century, human remains and colonial archaeology; museums and the representation of first nations.
As a curator, one of my key priorities is creating platforms for women and minority artists. I view my curatorial projects as a means to engage with talented emerging artists, most of whom are not represented by a gallery, and whom have not had a ‘lucky break’.
My academic research aims to extend the art historical canon, and focuses primarily on marginalized artists and art practices from the global south.
I have taught at numerous universities and art academies, including the University of Groningen (RUG), King’s College London, and Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Art, Limoges.
I was a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Sunderland and Newcastle (UK) and a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Tshwane University of Technology (South Africa).
My teaching inevitably reflects my research practice, and for example in 2022/2023 I taught a course in RUG’S MA Curatorial Studies programme, entitled, Collections & Artefacts: Contemporary Ceramics & Sustainability.
Over the past decade, I have curated major exhibitions on 3 continents – Africa, Europe & Asia, including Biennales in China and Taiwan.
My curatorial leadership was celebrated by my inclusion in the City Press’s list of 100 ‘World-Class South Africans’ (2014).
Author of numerous catalogues, book chapters and scholarly articles, including the acclaimed monograph on Southern African Potteries, Scorched Earth (395 pages, Jacana Media, 2016). This work has made a major contribution to ceramics history through its innovative celebration of a century of black worker’s history.
Delivered over 70 public lectures in nearly 30 countries and taught internationally.
Recipient of a PhD from the University of Sunderland; MA in History of Art (cum laude); Advanced University Diploma in Information Studies and BA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
